How to Properly Maintain House Plants

House plants are a great way to not only improve the look and feel of your home, but also improve the air quality around you. There are many health benefits of keeping plants indoors. Not only do they help us breathe better by removing toxins and pollutants from the air, but they also help in improving mental wellbeing. They uplift your mood and keep your mind fresh. However, if you are thinking of bringing home a Peruvian apple or some other indoor plant, it is a must that you take proper care of them. Generally, cacti and succulents do not require a lot of upkeep, but they still need to maintained properly. Here are some things you must take care of whenever keeping plants inside your home.

Provide adequate light

Whether it is an indoor plant or an outdoor plant, they cannot function properly unless given proper sunlight. They need natural light to freshen up. Each plant requires different amount of sunlight, so you must check the tag on the plant at the time of purchasing. There are some that require a lot of light and can be kept near a south-facing window as that is where you are bound to receive the maximum light. There are others that require indirect light. This can be provided by a bulb or if a light is filtered through a tinted window or a curtain. It is a must that you check up on the light requirement of your plant and do proper research before giving the light it needs. Do not keep them watered all the time

Water is crucial ingredient for all living beings and plants, whether indoor or outdoor, are not different. However, one small difference is that indoor plants do not require a lot of water to survive. Houseplants should be watered only when the surface of the soil looks completely dry. In case of Peruvian cactus and other types of cacti, the requirement of water is even lesser. They should only be watered when the soil is completely dry.

Provide manure and fertilizers

For proper growth and health of plants it is important that you give them enough fertilizers and manure. There are two ways in which you can add fertilizers to the plants. You can do it through water or via slow release of fertilizer. It is completely up to you regarding the type of method you wish to use as both are equally effective. If you are using fertilizer through water, then you can add water soluble fertilizer once a month in summers and about once every two months in winters. In case of slow-release fertilizer, you need to add it to the soil every two to three months.

Most indoor plants can’t tolerate a lot of cold

Most houseplants, like Peruvian vines, are tropical plants, they cannot survive in very cold conditions. Their natural habitat is warm and they thrive the most when kept in warmer conditions. They may not die out in extreme cold conditions, but will definitely not grow very well if subjected to prolonged cold.
